Photo Gallery: The Sky
|
A morning sky can come in many colors, but on a cold December morning,
some time before the sunrise, it glowed in an unusual orange near the horizon,
running into gentle purple towards the zenith.
|
After a warm, sunny November day on Madeira's neighbour island Porto Santo,
I boarded the ferry back to Madeira. As the last sunlight slowly faded,
a host of fleecy clouds shimmered in delicate colors.
|
On a February evening, I went to a viewpoint near the village Ribeira Brava at Madeira's south coast.
I relished the sunset in the warmth while I knew that it was bitter winter in Germany.

I was reading a book in Skagen's youth hostel when I noticed that the evening light
from the window had turned an unusual yellow.
When I left the house, the sky seemed to burn in intense colors.
|
When the dusk was falling, I climbed upon the roof
with my camera and a tiny tripod to get a time exposure of the mood and the evening sky.
The clouds are a bit blurred because they were moving during the exposure.
|
It took me some time until I realized that the strange thing
that was glowing in a faint green low above the horizon,
was not a cloud but a northern light.
Unfortunately, its gentle movements cannot be captured in a time exposure.
The yellow spot at the bottom is the the glow of the moon that was just about to rise.
